What does it mean to become a "big"?
First and foremost, you are a friend, a mentor, and someone your little can
depend on and learn from.
We strive to team you up with a young person with similar interests so you
can build a trusting and nduring friendship. As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you
get to be a kid again for a few hours a month and give a child the invaluable
gift of mentoring and friendship.
Be there
Bigs and Little do all kinds of activities together, many of which you may already be doing in your own life,
but the most important thing is to Be There! By being a positive role model you can have a significant
impact in a Little’s life and open their world up to new possibilities. To be a successful Big, you need to
commit to a minimum of one year and spend between 4-6 hours, 2-3 times per month with your Little.
But trust us, when you are paired with our Little Brothers and Little Sisters, this time commitment will
seem easy...you’ll enjoy it and as they become part of your lives you’ll start thinking about what you two
are going to do next, even if it is next year!
You’re joining a team of caring adults and you’ll have a network of support
When you volunteer as a Big, you are joining a group of caring and important adults in a young person’s life. You’ll have the support of the Little’s parent and teacher and, of course, our professional program staff. Once you meet your Little you will have a case manager who is there to help and be supportive for both of you in developing a trusted relationship and help with ideas on things to do or with concerns you might have.
